John S. Allen’s article “A look into the ‘bike box’” is an excellent primer on the variety of bike boxes and how they’re used around the world, as well as design-related safety issues.

I’ve also found that Jennifer Dill, Director of the Center for Transportation Studies at Portland State University is conducting a study that evaluates bikes boxes at signalized intersections. The research is funded by the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium; the Co-PI on the project is Prof. Chrisopher Monsere, CEE.
